The boar tusks and namile leaf on the Vanuatu flag represent prosperity and peace, respectively. Yellow is the color of bright light, symbolizing the divine light that shines over the entire Republic of Vanuatu.

The following colors have different meanings for Vanuatu:
Black: Represents Melanesia and the Melanesian people
Red: Represents the strong bonds of kinship
Green: Represents agriculture, which is the backbone of Vanuatu’s economy
Yellow: Represents Christ

The national emblem features the Vanuatu symbols of boar tusks and the namile leaf as its background. His Excellency Walter Hayde Lini fought for Vanuatu’s independence and became the first Prime Minister of Vanuatu. On Independence Day, he announced to everyone: “Long God Yumi Stanap” (In God we Stand), which means “We stand united before God” in Chinese. This also became Vanuatu’s motto. July 30, 1980, is Vanuatu’s Independence Day.
